The One Thing You Need To Really Succeed As a Personal Trainer

Fitness Trainer

I could have quite easily called this blog post “Why Most Personal Trainers Fail” because I’m aware that Threat Headlines get a lot more clicks than Gain Headlines.

But we're all about positivity here at My Personal Trainer Website and we have black belt ninja fitness marketing strategy so we’re not too worried about clicks.

I’m also going to just tell you how to really succeed as a personal trainer straight away, rather than bounce in and out of the subject throughout the blog and then reveal it to you at the end with a big Call To Action so you can buy our stuff.

So, how do you really succeed as a personal trainer? Easy…
Tenacity. Tenacity isn’t a word that’s used very often, although I think it should be, so people might be unclear as to what it means exactly. Here’s the definition:

The quality or fact of being very determined; determination (E.g. "you have to admire the tenacity of these two guys”)

Synonyms of Tenacity include: persistence, determination, perseverance, doggedness, strength of purpose, tirelessness, indefatigability, resolution, resoluteness, resolve, firmness, patience, purposefulness, staunchness, steadfastness, staying power, endurance, stamina, stubbornness, intransigence, obstinacy, obduracy and pertinacity.

You probably see where I’m going with this, right? So there’s no need to read on?

Well, hold fast because there are ways in which you can massively improve your tenacity and therefore improve your marketing. If you improve your marketing you get more clients, more money and more gold... if you’re in to that kind of thing.

Step 1 - Prepare a Plan Of Action

For any fitness business, strategy or an objective to be able to take shape rapidly, you need to develop a plan of action. One which is easy to accomplish.

You’d do the same thing for a client if they had a marathon to complete. So why, when it comes to your livelihood, the thing that will feed your family, would you not make a personal trainer business plan?

For example, if you dream of having your own fitness company, detail out all the steps aimed at accomplishing this project into a plan of action. If you need help, consult a few fitness business owners who have already launched their company successfully.

Speak to like minded fitness business owners here.

Then it’s just a case of creating your personal trainer business plan. If you have no idea where to start, you can have our step by step guide and personal trainer business plan template download in the Academy!

Step 2 - Execute the Plan

It really is that simple but this is the step where most personal trainers give up and get discouraged. Why? Often, because they have underestimated the number of obstacles to be overcome.

This is the precise moment when you must display your courage and tenacity. Refrain from thinking that you do not have talent or luck like the others who have already achieved a lot of success before you. Keep in mind that those who have succeeded have very often faced the same difficulties as you.

And just because you implemented a fitness marketing strategy on Monday and it didn’t bring you any clients on Tuesday, does not mean you plan doesn’t work.

In the beginning, when you move into the execution phase with a view of achieving your objective, your efforts will probably give you little or no results. This is completely normal and it's important is that you always try to do better and better, day by day, reminding yourself that a small step taken, every day, in the same direction will allow you, after a few months and few years, to achieve positive results.

This approach of doing things should not be temporary, but must become a permanent way of life relevant to what you undertake.

Why Most Personal Trainers Fail

There it is. The Threat Headline. Maybe it’s OK to use it now that we’ve established a little rapport?

So why do most personal trainers fail. Why do they lose tenacity for their business? And what can you do to detect the early signs of fitness business failure?
  1. Do something you are passionate about - If you lack passion for your work, the 12 hour days that you DO need to put in (despite what some fitness business gurus tell you) will be too much hard work.
  2. Believe you are capable - If you don’t right now, that’s fine. But you may certainly need to work on your self development before things get tough. Or do what I did and get so good at marketing that you can’t NOT be confident in the work you do.
  3. Analyse and adapt - If you’re not measuring what’s working and what isn’t, how will you know which part of your plan is working and which isn’t? No plan is perfect first time round. It’s forever adapting and changing to you and your fitness business.
